Cellulite is a term used to denote the dimpled appearance of fat on the bottom, hips, or thighs of women. Cellulite fat is similar to normal body fat. The dimpled appearance of cellulite only happen on women. The explanation seems to be that women's fat cell are grouped in sacs and held in place between the layers of tissue. These strand cannot be expand, so especially when weight is gained or the skin is squeezed, the fat globules distort and push through, producing the orange peel look of cellulite.
The female sex hormone oestrogen also causes most women to lay down most fat on the bottom, hips and thighs - where cellulite is most obvious. Poor skin tone/elasticity and lack of exercise make cellulite more obvious.
Why does even slim women get cellulite?
Even slim women has a body fat composition of around 20% fat. Women natural hormone oestrogens mean that fat is often deposited on the bottom, hips and thighs, where cellulite appears. As women aged skin tone, strength and elasticity may also be poor, hence older slim women can also developed cellulite. However slim women who take a lot of regular lower body exercise (e.g runners, dancers, ice skaters) very rarely have any sign of cellulite.
