Diet pills is an adjunct to other weight-loss therapies and a way to maintain body weight over time.  However, it should be pointed out that diet pills are best used in conjunction with diet and lifestyle management.  It also should also be noted that diet pills should only be used with medical supervision.

Here are some diet pill that are most likely to be prescribed:

  • Orlistat (brand name Xenical) - This slimming pills works by blocking the absorption of about one third of the fat in your food.  Common guideline of prescribing olistat is that

    •  you should have lost 2.5 kg in the previous month by diet and exercise

    •  be between 18 - 75

    • have BMI of at least 28

  • Sibutramine (Meridia in US and Reductil in UK) - This slimming pills work by inhibiting appetite and simulating metabolic rate.  Possible side effect include increase in blood pressure.

  • Phentermine - Another slimming pills that simulates the central nervous system and is used as an appetite supressant.

Diet pill should only be used if it is recommended by a doctor or specialist who knows you.  It is not recommended to obtain the drug from doctor who has never meet before.
