Grapefruit History and Grapefruit Origin

The term grapefruit originated in Jamaica in 1814. The grapefruit origin is in the West Indies since it was never known of in the Orient before then.   The modern grapefruit history began in Florida when in was brought to Florida by the Spaniards in 1823.  Initially the tree was grown only for its beauty in gardens.  It also has sweet blossoms and dark glossy leaves.

Very few people ate the grapefruit in olden times.  They didn't like the slightly bitter taste.  So they owner would let the ripe grapefruit ripe and fall to the ground and rot there.

It was actually visitors from the north of America who first created the grapefruit demand for grapefruit.  In the late 19th century they began coming down to Florida by rail-road to spend the winter.  They began to like the grapefruit and wanted to have it when the returned home.

The modern American grapefruit growing industry began in Florida in the mid-1800s. The first shipment were sent to New York and Philadelphia between 1880 and 1885.

Many of the early varieties of fruit resemble their wild-growing cousins in that they're smaller and contain many seeds. More recent hybrids are bred for appearance and size. The shelf-appeal and seedless varieties developed for the fresh fruit market have been bred at the expense of flavor. Because the older varieties are often superior in taste and juiciness, they are used to make grapefruit juice.  Grapefruit is a healthy fruit to eat, it is a rich source of Vitamin C.  Only orange and lemon have more Vitamin C than the grapefruit.
